Megadyne™ Electrode Recall Investigation

Robins Kaplan is Looking Into Reports of Patient Burn Injuries

Overview

Our Lawyers Are Ready to Assist You

Robins Kaplan mass tort attorneys are investigating severe patient burn injuries related to certain models of Megadyne’s Reusable Patient Return Electrodes recall. Products like the Megadyne MEGA 2000 and MEGA SOFT Reusable Patient Return Electrodes are soft pads used in some electrosurgeries that aim to reduce the risk of excessive heating when an electric current is used to heat, cut tissue, or stop bleeding.1

On July 18, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice titled “Megadyne Recalls MEGA 2000 and MEGA Soft Reusable Patient Return Electrodes for Risk of Serious Burn Injuries to Patients.”2 The recall was initiated by Megadyne Medical Products, Inc., a company bought by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a Johnson & Johnson MedTech subsidiary, in 2017.3

In June 2024, the company stated in part that the MEGA SOFT and MEGA 2000 Reusable Patient Return Electrodes are “now limited to use in patients age 12 years or older” and should not be used for individuals that are newborns, infants, or children.4 The FDA also identified this recall as “the most serious type,” which is known as Class I.5

Reason for Recall

The recall is in response to at least 63 reports of injuries related to this issue. Some injuries may be as serious as third-degree burns requiring medical intervention, increased length of hospital stays, scarring, and possibly more surgeries for child and adult patients.6
