Fetal Distress

Birth Injury

Overview

What is Fetal Distress?

Fetal distress is a term used to describe the declining condition of a fetus during the antepartum (before labor) or intrapartum (during labor and delivery) periods.  Fetal distress can be detected through ultrasound or fetal heart monitoring – either external or internal.

Fetal Distress Can Lead to Birth Injuries

Immediate intervention is needed when fetal distress is suspected such as continuous fetal monitoring, maternal position changes, IV fluids, medication, and possibly an urgent need to deliver the baby. Failure to take action by medical professionals may contribute to permanent injuries to the baby.
