Overview
Mr. Gleason is a trial attorney with an emphasis on healthcare law, government investigations, and complex business litigation. Mr. Gleason currently represents various healthcare plans in multi-million-dollar litigation with providers involving claims improper billing, breach of contract, and fraud. He leads internal investigations involving compliance, regulatory, and employment issues. He also represents Fortune 500 companies in complex business and antitrust disputes.
Prior to joining Robins Kaplan, Mr. Gleason was a Trial Attorney in the Civil Fraud Section of the Department of Justice, where he led False Claims Act investigations and litigation on behalf of the United States. Mr. Gleason specialized in healthcare fraud cases and secured settlements totaling well over $100 million, including a record-setting resolution against an individual physician, for which Mr. Gleason was awarded a Special Commendation for Outstanding Service in the Civil Division.
Pro bono work has always been an important part of Mr. Gleason’s practice. He represented a juvenile accused of unlawful possession of a controlled substance. The client was charged with a felony, but Mr. Gleason convinced the prosecutor to drop the charges. Most recently, he convinced the prosecution to dismiss a felon-in-possession based on a lengthy investigation that demonstrated his client’s innocence.
Prior to joining Robins Kaplan, Mr. Gleason was awarded the President’s Award by the Boston Bar Association for his representation of six detainees held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was also selected as a Public Interest Fellow by the Boston Bar Association in recognition of his leadership in public interest law.

At the Department of Justice Mr. Gleason led multi-agency civil fraud investigations and litigation involving potential violations of the False Claims Act, 31 U.S.C. §§ 3729-3733, and Anti-Kickback Statute, 42 U.S.C. §1320a-7b. Mr. Gleason’s cases resulted in well over $100 million being returned to the U.S. Treasury.

Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Mr. Gleason practiced at WilmerHale in Boston where he handled a wide variety of cases, including contract disputes, patent litigation, privacy law, and civil rights claims. While at WilmerHale, Mr. Gleason was part of a team that represented six detainees held on Guantanamo Bay as enemy combatants. After the Supreme Court found in his clients’ favor in the landmark decision of Boumediene v. Bush, Mr. Gleason was part of a trial team that tried the first ever detainee cases in U.S. federal court. For his efforts in assisting these individuals, Mr. Gleason received the 2007 President’s Award from the Boston Bar Association.

Representative Matters
- Represented Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri and other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in litigation against defendants who conspired to defraud the healthcare insurers through utilization of a laboratory pass-through billing scheme. The defendants and their co-conspirators took control of a Critical Access Hospital in Unionville, MO called Putnam County Memorial Hospital, and used the hospital to bill our clients $18 million for lab tests performed by their laboratory in Colorado. By billing the tests through the hospital, they obtained substantially inflated reimbursements. Robins Kaplan secured a jury verdict for compensatory and punitive damages totaling $25.6 million.
- Won dismissal on a motion to dismiss of putative class action involving breach of contract claims on behalf of a Fortune 100 retailer.
- Hubbard Broadcasting Inc. v. DirecTV: Part of team that won summary judgment on behalf of Hubbard in a breach of contract case.
- Sholom Community Alliance v Estate of Raymond Perlman: Negotiated favorable settlement on behalf of nursing home in case involving an oral charitable pledge.
- US ex rel. Allen v. Boston Scientific et. al: $30 million settlement to resolve allegations that device manufacturer sold defective implantable cardiac defibrillators.
- US. ex rel. Freedman v. SuarezHoyos et al.: $26.1 million settlement to resolve allegations of a physician's receipt of illegal kickbacks and performance of medically unnecessary dermatology procedures. One of the largest False Claims Act settlements with an individual in U.S. history. (Prior to joining Robins Kaplan LLP)
- US. ex rel. Sims v. Life Watch Services: $18.5 million settlement to resolve allegations of unnecessary use of heart monitoring services. (Prior to joining Robins Kaplan LLP)
