MINNEAPOLIS, MN—June 27, 2016—Robins Kaplan LLP® announced today that it has placed among the top five firms in the nation for pro bono work, according to just-released rankings by The American Lawyer. The firm ranked fourth in the magazine’s annual pro bono survey, which highlights the Am Law 200 firms with the deepest commitment to pro bono work over the past year.

“Robins Kaplan is deeply devoted to leveling the playing field for those who lack access to justice, and we’re thankful to see that reflected in this year’s rankings from The American Lawyer,” said Patrick Arenz, chair of Robins Kaplan’s Pro Bono Committee. “Once again, Robins Kaplan contributed extensive resources to those who need trial counsel but cannot afford it, and we are proud to have achieved many life-changing results for our pro bono clients.”

Robins Kaplan has consistently ranked near the top of the Am Law 200 for pro bono work. Since 2008, more than seven percent of the firm’s total billable hours have been contributed to pro bono legal services. The firm’s 2016 ranking represents a nine-spot jump from 2015, when it placed 15th. Firm lawyers spent an average of nearly 119 hours on pro bono projects in 2016, and more than three-quarters of firm lawyers devoted more than 20 hours to pro bono service.

In the last year, Robins Kaplan has continued to dedicate significant pro bono efforts to rewrite the odds for those in need. The firm has handled individual matters on a wide range of issues for clients of all walks of life, including children, survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, and veterans. Robins Kaplan has also undertaken significant impact litigation matters, including representation of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe against the federal government after it closed the only hospital emergency room on the tribe’s reservation, as well as representation of a 19-year-old transgender man to ensure that the Affordable Care Act’s ban on sex discrimination prohibits discrimination on the basis of an individual’s transgender status.

The firm’s pro bono program has received numerous accolades, including recently being named as one of Law360’s 2015 Pro Bono Firms of the Year and inclusion in The National Law Journal’s 2016 Pro Bono Hot List.
