Robins Kaplan LLP mourns the passing of our friend and longtime partner Steve Brand. He died on Friday, April 15 at the age of 73.
Well known for his extensive work in estate planning and trust and estate administration, Steve counseled individuals and their families, trustees, beneficiaries, guardians, conservators, and more in all aspects of estate planning and succession planning.
An exceptional attorney, Steve was a fellow and past regent of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and former president of the Probate & Trust Law section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. He was named a “Senior Statesperson” by Chambers USA in 2019. This ranking is reserved for distinguished practitioners, deeply admired across the profession, who are regarded as vital to the firm. He also received the “Sidney Barrows Lifetime Commitment Award” from the Cardozo Society for exemplifying excellence in his practice, community service in the Jewish and general community, and commitment to life-long learning.
Beyond his tremendous skills and expertise as a lawyer, he was a voracious reader and student of history; a kind, patient, and wise man; and a beloved friend to many.
“Steve made a positive difference in the lives of so many – clients and colleagues alike. He will be greatly missed and impossible to replace, but his legacy of outstanding legal work, kindness, and compassion will endure in the lives of those he served and worked with, as well as all who were fortunate enough to know him,” said longtime partner Matthew Frerichs.
Steve is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years Gail, children Cadence and Joshua, and grandchildren Khai and Rowan.
