Robins Kaplan LLP is pleased to announce that Patrick Arenz has been selected for inclusion in the Bloomberg Law inaugural “They’ve Got Next: The 40 Under 40” list. This award recognizes 40 attorneys under 40 years old across the United States with track records of success in significant client matters.
Patrick handles high-stakes disputes for a diverse set of clients, ranging from Fortune 100 companies to small inventor-led companies and individuals. His practice focuses on patent and copyright infringement matters, trade secret misappropriation, breach of contract disputes, and business and individual tort cases.
In one recent achievement, Patrick served as co-lead counsel representing celebrity chef Chloe Coscarelli in a breach of contract, right of publicity, and trademark dispute. Chef Chloe originally partnered with ESquared to open a chain of vegan restaurants that bore her name. Through a series of legal maneuvers, ESquared seized Chloe’s 50% ownership interest in the company for $0. When the resulting dispute over ownership and retail products was referred to arbitration, Chloe won a complete victory, as the arbitrator restored her interest as a 50% owner of the company. The arbitrator also awarded more than $2 million in fees and costs. Patrick separately won a federal court order preventing the company from selling the eponymous “by Chloe” trademark without her consent.
Patrick also served as co-lead trial counsel in Covidien v. Esch, in which a federal jury in the District of Massachusetts held the defendant, a former Covidien employee, liable for breaching his contracts with Covidien by disclosing and using confidential information to start his own company. Covidien received a final judgment in excess of $2 million.
In addition, Patrick was trial counsel in Megdal Associates LLC v. La-Z-Boy, Inc. In this David-versus-Goliath matter, Patrick represented an inventor’s small company seeking to enforce a license agreement it had signed with furniture manufacturer La-Z-Boy, Inc. Ultimately, a federal jury in Fort Lauderdale awarded Patrick’s client, Megdal Associates, $5.7 million for breach of the technology license agreement. La-Z-Boy later settled for $13.5 million.
In addition to his legal practice, Patrick served as chair of the Robins Kaplan Pro Bono Committee from 2015 through 2018. Under Patrick’s leadership, the firm’s pro bono program received an impressive string of recognition from Law360, The National Law Journal, and The American Lawyer. Following the conclusion of his term as Pro Bono Chair, Patrick was later appointed to the role of Chair of the Robins Kaplan Recruiting/Hiring Committee. In this role, Patrick oversees the 225-attorney firm’s recruiting efforts, helping to ensure that Robins Kaplan continues to recruit a talented and diverse slate of new associates who are prepared to carry on the firm’s longstanding traditions of courtroom excellence and dedication to justice for all.
