Civil Rights Attorneys Reached $550,000 Settlement in Iowa Police Shooting

Robins Kaplan civil rights attorneys secured a $550,000 settlement on behalf of client, Myles Regenold, who was shot in the arm by a police officer in March 2019 in Polk County, Iowa. In the middle of the night, our client was caught burglarizing a car wash, a crime which he pled guilty. The police officers on scene claimed that Regenold did not comply with their demands and began advancing towards them, at which point they shot at him. Mr. Regenold sustained injuries to his dominant arm causing permanent impairment and requiring an open reduction and internal fixation surgery to repair and place broken bones back into place.

The lawsuit claimed that there was no legal justification for the shooting, with Regenold claiming that the police officer’s statement was not true. Audio obtained from a body worn camera during the event established critical facts that helped secure the eventual settlement. The injury location also supported Regenold’s recollection of the event. The bullet hit the underside of his forearm, implying and confirming that our client’s hands were up and in a surrender pose when the shooting occurred.
